Two juveniles

Two juveniles

Location: Earth » North America » United States » South Carolina » Beaufort County

Date: July 5, 0008

Now I am sure that these are two different young birds. I was able to get shots of each one and then merged them into one to upload. They were NOT sitting together like this...they were on different trees but at about the same time of day. I think you might be right that the one on the left is a very young Black Crowned Night Heron and the one on the right a young Yellow-Crowned. I will try to continue to track and post both of these young ones. Carol

Not a Yellow Crowned Night Heron
Sorry but the bird that you are describing as a Yellow Crowned Night Heron is not correct. It is in fact a black crowned notice the shorter neck. The Yellow Crowned Night Heron has a longer neck please see photo of the Juvenile Black Crowned Night Heron located at this link http://www.pbase.com/tgrey/image/75649401 There are a few great shots of the Juvenile Yellow Crowned Night Heron under my photo's. This Juvenile has been visiting us for the last several days starting the end of Aug. and is a very friendly fellow. He lets us get very close and if we stand quite still he gets closer to us.

But...
Carol has described the one with the apparently longer neck as the Yellow-crowned Night-Heron.

Check this image: http://www.pbase.com/tgrey/image/96242432. Long neck or short neck?
