Song Sparrow

Song Sparrow

Location: Earth » North America » United States » Ohio » Perry County

Date: July 11, 2007

I don't know my sparrows that well. I'm guessing Song Sparrow (Melospiza melodia) but I would appreciate a confirmation or correction.

Process of Elimination
If we could just eliminate Fox Sparrow then it would be Song Sparrow.

Fox vs. Song
Could we eliminate Fox Sparrow by range? The Sibley guide shows central Ohio on the border of Winter and Migration for the Fox Sparrow. July should not qualify as migration time, right?

Song Sparrows are listed as year-round in that area.

I Wouldn't.
Field guide maps, especially on that scale, are limited in accuracy. On June 29th, 1996, I had a White-crowned Sparrow in Yavapai County, Arizona. These irregularities can happen.

Song Sparrow
I'm pretty certain it's a song sparrow because of the absence of grey on the face/wings and the streaking as opposed to spots on the breast.

Cheers.

Song Sparrow
Tail length and appearance fits Song Sparrow. Fox Sparrow has a shorter tail in proportion to its body. Additionally, tail is more reddish-brown.

Changed Taxon
Media was moved from ID Request. Seems like the comments favor Song Sparrow, so I think we're OK to move it there. Thanks everyone.
