Black-crowned Night-heron

Black-crowned Night-heron

Location: Earth » North America » United States » South Carolina » Greenwood County

Date: April 6, 2008

I was kayaking today on the lake near my house. I crept into one of the few undeveloped areas of the lake, and saw some birds in one of the pine trees. They looked like herons but not our typical Great Blues. I let them be while I continued my paddle.

After I got home, I looked them up in my field guide and found they were Black-crowned Night Herons. I wasn't far from their location, so I took a shot to see if they were still there. I crept through the woods and found that they were. I startled them and they flew across the inlet, but actually into better light. I took two shots and then the battery in my camera died! Very frustrating, but one of the shots turned out OK, and that is posted here. I may try again tomorrow with a fresh battery!
