Location: Earth » Africa » Tanzania Date: July 12, 2007 I think this bird is a Square tailed nightjar, but I'm not shure. Nightjar
Thank you for posting. This is a beautiful photograph.
I updated your entry to list the country as Tanzania.
This website is young and we don't have an African bird authority yet. I need to get a field guide.
Your photo is similar to this photo which was identified as a square-tailed nightjar.
If you go to The Birds of East Africa at amazon.com, and click "Search Inside this Book", you can search on Nightjars. On page 206 of the search results it notes that nightjars are hard to identify. Page 207 has a plate with the square-tailed nightjar, and your image looks similar to it.
However, I welcome the opinion of someone more knowledgeable about African birds.
