Green Heron
I'm thinking not an American Bittern but a first-year Green Heron.

Green Heron
Thanks for checking me. My first instinct was a Green Heron, but it seemed noticeably larger than any adult Green Heron I had seen. Also, when I first came across it, it was exhibiting the head/neck up behavior which struck me odd. After going through many, many images online, I think I agree with you; I didn't see many images of the American Bitterns with such a dark cap. The ones that did show this feature may have been misidentified, just as I have done. Also, this one doesn't seem as short as the bitterns appear. Plus, you have many more years birding than I. Thanks again.
