Juvenile Mallard Duck

Juvenile Mallard Duck

Location: Earth » North America » United States » Florida » Duval County

Date: June 16, 2007

This Is either a juvenile mallard or Florida mottled duck. I took this at a pond in Jacksonville Beach, Florida where there were several of both families.

Changed Taxon
Media was moved from Anas platyrhynchos. Unless we can be certain it's a mallard, let's put it at the genus level.

Hybrid?
It would probably take an up-to-date expert to sort this out but this specimen has the white tail feathers of Mallard and what looks like the curled-up tail feathers of Mallard male but the olive-green beak of the Mottled Duck (Anas fulvigula) or American Black Duck (Anas rubripes). I don't know that mallards can have a beak that color.? On the other hand, these birds can hybridize like nobody's business.

To follow any maturing in plumage may be instructive.
