Date: December 31, 2004 Again, not a sharp photo. But this one was interesting to me as it was the first new species I found through just the photograph. The bird was high in a tree above my house, near a wooded area. I photographed it and assumed it was one of the typical downy woodpeckers in the area. Only once I got it up on the computer did I see it was a new bird for me.

Note the apparent lack of white barring on the back. What's up with that? Image shows throat pattern nicely.
