Sanderling or Sandpiper? in Utila, Honduras

Sanderling or Sandpiper? in Utila, Honduras
Earth » North America » Honduras » Islas de la Bahía

Date: November 8, 2009 We've seen a flock of these for a few days now- quick moving, hard to photgraph. South Shore, Utila, Bay Islandss of Honduras.

We think Sanderling or Sandpiper, but haven't done much id work with these little guys- Can someone help out with id please? Thanks!

They are Calidris plovers (aka peeps as they are called in North America). Without a good picture they are really hard to put to species. I am certain these are not Sanderlings (Calidris alba), but one of the others. Least Sandpiper is my best guess from these shots. (BTW Sandpiper is a term referring to any shore-dwelling wader, so to speak.)

sandpipers
These are certainly Calidris sandpipers. It is difficult to determine species since the birds are so small in the image.
