Hwamei

Hwamei

Location: Earth » Asia » China » Hong Kong

Date: August 16, 2006

Garrulax canorus. Popular as a cagebird in China - a bird with a cheerful song. The name is Chinese for "painted eyebrow", a very appropriate name!
I actually took this image at the Edward Youde Conservatory, a huge dome filled with hundreds of free-flying birds. The Hwamei is native to Hong Kong, so I find it interesting that they'd exhibit a native bird. I guess it's because this species is common, but often too elusive in the wild to be noticed.
