Adult and Juvenile Bald Eagles

Adult and Juvenile Bald Eagles

Date: January 16, 2009 OK, here's another cropped version. I was really far away and have only an 18-200mm lens on my camera. I know the photo is not that great but I find the behavior interesting...

After looking closer I am wondering if the bird on the right is a 3rd year juvenile bald eagle? Any thoughts on this?

My best evaluation -- and really size limits the possibilities -- is that this is a basic I plumage (2nd yr.) Bald Eagle. I was thrown by the homogeneity of the breast-belly and what seems to be rufous coloration especially around the neck. There are variants of this plumage phase. Someone with more extensive experience with this species may be more familiar with such phenomena. I noticed that this is actually a different image from the first one. This one allows us to see the beak quite nicely. The underwings on the bird on the left appear to be white but we may never get a good look at that. I'm quite certain of this identification. This is a good one.
