ID
You're probably right, but my Birds of CR guide notes that the females look similar to the females of the Purple-throated Moutain-gem. However, it notes that the Gray-tailed replaces the Purple-throated in the Cordillera de Talamanca, but they occur together in the north end. In that area the Gray-tailed is supposed to be at higher elevations.

So I guess as long as you weren't at the north end, it's safe to say it's a Gray-tailed.

Yes
I'm about 90% certain of the ID. We had a guide for an hour and he had been birding there for almost 30 years. He had memorized the entire bird book by Alexander Skutch! I think it's probably right. Thanks,

Graham
