Quetzal

Quetzal
Earth » North America » Costa Rica

Date: July 20, 2007 Unfortunately this is the best photo I got of a quetzal, but I'm not complaining. I doubt many people see these in their whole lifetime and I see it as a 14 year old! It was in the Talamanca mountains of Costa Rica in front of the cabin my family was staying at. I looked out the window and this male quetzal landed on the line. I ran full speed down the road with pointy rocks(in my bare feet)(ouch)and got a couple photos. It was one of the most exciting moments of my life.

Nice
Good photo. I was in Costa Rica in 2001 and missed out on seeing one, though I guess the season wasn't quite right when I was there.

I moved your image to the Resplendent Quetzal, Pharomachrus mocinno, and according to my CR field guide, it's a male, so I set that tag too.

Thanks for posting.

Thanks
Mike. This is a bit different from bugguide, but I like it already. A great idea!

Also
I would recommend the place I went to: Savegre. I saw almost 50 species of birds in 5 days and 16 quetzals.
